CONSTRUCTION

S.D. Deacon recently hired Ben Bracelin and Steve Smith as business development managers in its Portland office.

Bracelin will focus primarily on expanding special projects and the Remco Deacon division. He has worked in account services and client relations management, most recently with the Daily Journal of Commerce.

Smith will focus primarily on expanding the firm鈥檚 general construction portfolio. He has leadership abilities and a successful track record of driving organizational growth as a sales and management professional.

BUSINESS

Respect Your Universe Inc., a performance lifestyle apparel brand, recently relocated its headquarters from Las Vegas to Portland. The company鈥檚 offices are at 818 N. Russell St. The company creates environmentally and ethically sound products, crafted from organic and recycled materials.

CONSTRUCTION

Perlo Construction recently launched a health care services division, and hired Jeff Sawyer and Libby Metz to lead it.

Sawyer is director of health care services. He is responsible for identifying and pursuing specific opportunities that meet strategic goals. He also oversees operations, employees and projects as the company continues to seek a greater share of the health care market. He has more than 31 years of construction experience, and 24 years of expertise in health care.

Metz is health care services project manager. She has six years of experience serving as a project manager focusing on a diverse assortment of medical work. Before that, she spent 10 years working for a mechanical contracting firm on an array of commercial projects in the Portland and Seattle markets.

EDUCATION

Bridget Burns, chief of staff for the Oregon University System, recently was named an ACE Fellow for the 2013-14 academic year. The American Council on Education鈥檚 Fellows program, established in 1965, is designed to strengthen institutions and leadership in American higher education by identifying and preparing promising senior faculty members and administrators for responsible positions in college and university administration. This year, 50 Fellows, nominated by the presidents or chancellors of their institutions, were selected following a rigorous application process. Burns provides the OUS leadership for programs, policy initiatives and mandates of the Oregon State Board of Higher Education. She leads both federal and state government relations on behalf of the university system, and serves as a key policy adviser to the board and chancellor.

ENGINEERING

Tigard-based Northwest Engineering Service Inc. recently purchased Maiani Construction Services 鈥� a business based in Athol, Idaho, just north of Coeur d鈥� Alene. MCS is now a wholly owned subsidiary of NWESI, which has provided building commissioning, testing, adjusting, balancing and related services to clients since 1958.

LAW

Loren Podwill, a shareholder in Bullivant Houser Bailey鈥檚 Portland office, recently was re-elected to the firm鈥檚 board of directors to serve a three-year term. Three other Portland-based shareholders 鈥� John Bennett, Ron Clark and Dick Whittemore 鈥� and San Francisco-based Andy Downs also are members of the five-person board.
