May is National Preservation Month, and a wide range of programs are planned throughout the month and across Oregon.

The next one is “How to Research Your Historic Building,” a workshop on May 14, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Albany City Hall. City Planner Anne Catlin will present the workshop.

Albany is a sort of hot spot for historic preservation, said Sheri Stuart of the Oregon Office of Historic Preservation. She runs the office’s Oregon Main Street program, which connects communities with resources to preserve their historic downtown buildings.

Stuart said Albany is a shining example.

“Albany is amazing,” Stuart said. “They go all out when it comes to historic preservation.”

City officials offer matching grants for local buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The matching grants are specifically available for repairing historic elements visible from the street.

Catlin, who has a master’s degree in urban and regional planning, will teach people at the workshop how to research and document the history of buildings as well as how to get the properties listed on the national register.
