California-based SSC Construction is building a 50 million-gallon reservoir in Powell Butte Nature Park for the Portland Water Bureau. The $81 million project is part of a larger $137 project fulfilling a master plan for the site, which is home to another reservoir of equal size constructed in the 1970’s. The project includes the construction of the reservoir and connecting pipelines and vaults, a maintenance building, interpretive center, and caretaker’s house, as well as rebuilding of trails and landscaping.
The first phase of construction was completed in 2010 and involved excavating hundreds of tons of soil to make room for the underground reservoir. A total of 55 subcontractors have so far worked on the project’s current phase, which will ultimately use 6 million pounds of rebar and 53,000 cubic yards of concrete.
The reservoir will begin operating this October, and total project completion is slated for fall 2014.
