The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry is looking to develop one of Portland’s largest remaining riverfront parcels.

OMSI has hired ZGF Architects LLP to develop phase II of its district plan, which will identify development opportunities for a 6.4-acre stretch slightly south of its Water Avenue campus. Paul Carlson, the museum’s senior vice president, said in a prepared statement that the effort would inform OMSI’s board of trustees, and contribute to the growth and vitality of the Central Eastside.

ZGF began working with OMSI on the initial planning process in 2008. Goals for that effort were to define a long-term vision for the site and illustrate how transportation infrastructure, strategic partnerships, existing facilities and third-party developments might interact to create a “distinctive district.”

In the next phase, the team will seek to evaluate relevant real estate markets, recommend a feasible mix of land uses, and implement a development timetable, among other things.
