It may take a village to raise a child. But it took a school district, an entire community and a roster of companies from the building industry to raise a school in Vernonia.

The joint effort to replace the rural city’s three schools destroyed by a flood with a new, highly sustainable building paid off Tuesday evening when the Vernonia K-12 School project was honored as “Best in Show” at the Daily Journal of Commerce’s 2013 TopProjects event.

The project, which was submitted by the project’s general contractor, P&C Construction, also placed first in the public buildings category.

Joining the Vernonia school on the stage as winners were: the Maryhill Museum of Art expansion and renovation, submitted by Schommer & Sons and GBD Architects in the private buildings category; the Oregon City Arch Bridge rehabilitation, submitted by Pacific Precast and Wildish Standard Paving in the public works/infrastructure/transportation category; and the Keen Footwear headquarters and retail flagship store, submitted by R&H Construction in the renovation category.

This year’s TopProjects awards competition drew nearly 95 entries. The 91视频 editorial team handled initial judging, thinning the pool to six finalists per category.

The finalists were then sent to a panel of judges, who selected a winner in each category as well as the overall winner. This year’s panel included Chris DiLoreto, founder of DiLoretoArchitecture; Rebecca Ellsworth, an associate principal and senior engineer at Interface Engineering; Sid Scott, founding partner of Scott | Edwards Architecture; and Christian Steinbrecher, president and chief engineer of Ukiah Engineering and president of the Oregon chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

In addition to the “Best in Show” and category winners, 20 projects were honored as finalists.

Private building finalists included: CID Bio-Science Inc. headquarters, submitted by ZGF Architects; Gray’s Landing, submitted by General Sheet Metal and Walsh Construction Co.; Kaiser Permanente Westside Medical Center, submitted by AECOM, Kaiser Permanente and PKA Architects; New Blanchet House of Hospitality, submitted by Melvin Mark Development; and Target 鈥� Jantzen Beach, submitted by MulvannyG2 Architecture.

Public building finalists were: Lowrie Primary School, submitted by P&C Construction; Oregon Military Department Colonel Nesmith Readiness Center, submitted by Lease Crutcher Lewis; Ridgeview High School, submitted by Skanska USA; Sherman County OSU Extension Service and Experiment Station, submitted by Di LoretoArchitecture; and Wallowa Medical Office Building, submitted by Andersen Construction.

Public works/infrastructure/transportation finalists included: Interstate 5 鈥� Southwest Gibbs Street Pedestrian Bridge, submitted by Wildish Standard Paving Co.; Portland Streetcar loop project, submitted by URS Corp.; Trolley Trail, submitted by Harper Houf Peterson Righellis; U.S. 30 Burnt River and Union Pacific Railroad Bridge, submitted by Hamilton Construction; and Westmoreland Fish Passage Phase 1, submitted by Hamilton Construction.

Renovation finalists were: Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, submitted by LCG Pence Construction; PCC Sylvania Campus 鈥� Health and Technology Pool renovation, submitted by Howard S. Wright, a Balfour Beatty Co.; Portland Union Station seismic upgrade and improvements, submitted by P&C Construction; Raven and Rose, submitted by Bremik Construction; and Sunnyside Library, submitted by Scott | Edwards Architecture.
