Some companies celebrate an anniversary with a cake; others hold an open house. Temp-Control Mechanical decided to celebrate its 60 years in business by changing its name and brand.

The company, now known simply as TCM, says its shortened name and the accompanying launch of a new brand identity reflect the construction industry’s move toward streamlining how projects are handled.

Since it was founded in 1953, the full-service mechanical contractor has been involved in some of the most recognizable projects in the region, including Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel, the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum, Facebook’s data center in Prineville, and the Collaborative Life Sciences Building being built in Portland’s South Waterfront area.

A group of teens involved in a group called Young Life Oregon weeded and cleaned their way to a summer camp trip this year, with a little help from WHPacific.

The company sponsored the Crook County work-a-thon, which allowed 86 young people to help spruce up their community while earning money to attend Washington Family Ranch camp in Antelope.

WHPacific has supported Young Life Oregon since 1996, and says it plans to sponsor the group’s work-a-thon next year.

Forget that old advice to go west. When Northwest Engineering Service Inc. looked for opportunity, it turned to the east and purchased Idaho-based Maiani Construction Services. Maiani, which will now operate as a subsidiary of NWESI, is located in Athol, just north of Coeur d’Alene. The company specializes in commissioning, testing, adjusting and balancing. NWESI has been providing similar services to customers in the Pacific Northwest since 1958.

The sidewalks of the Broadway Bridge will be closed to bicyclists and pedestrians beginning Tuesday at 9 a.m. The closure is necessary to accommodate replacement of nonstick coating portions that have begun to peel away from the sidewalks, according to Portland Bureau of Transportation spokesman Dylan Rivera.

The coating was laid down as part of the Portland Streetcar central loop extension project. The work is expected to finish by Friday at 5:30 a.m., weather permitting.

The cost for the repair work is covered under general contractor Stacy and Witbeck’s overall bridge warranty, Rivera said. Hamilton Construction served as bridge subcontractor for the project. Via work around the clock, the repairs will be completed in three days rather than the five that would be required if work were limited to daytime hours.

Nominations are being accepted for the 2014 U.S. Wood Design Awards, which shine a spotlight on nonresidential and multifamily projects that feature outstanding and innovative wood design.

WoodWorks, an initiative of the Wood Products Council, presents regional and national awards in eight categories. Two projects from Oregon were national winners in 2013: The Central Oregon Community College science center was honored in the institutional wood category, and the University of Oregon Alumni Center was honored in the interior beauty of wood category.

The rules to nominate projects are straightforward. To be eligible, projects or the firms that worked on them must be located in the U.S. or its territories, and projects must be fully constructed by Sept. 30.

Nominations must be received by midnight, Sept. 30. Multiple submissions are allowed, and there is no cost to submit projects.
