Bruce Howell, a shareholder in the Portland office of Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt, has been appointed to serve on the board of directors of All Classical 89.9 KQAC FM. The radio station was established in 1983 to help foster an appreciation for classical music in Portland and throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Howell, who received his law degree from the University of Michigan School of Law, focuses his practice on health law, including reimbursement, fraud and abuse and heath care insurance. He also handles issues involving genetics, organ transplant and reproductive technology and clinical research.

It’s been a busy few weeks for Miller Nash partner Wayne D. Landsverk. He recently was named a Fellow in the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, and was elected secretary and chairman-elect of CUE Inc., an organization that promotes employee relations.

Landsverk, who has been a lawyer for nearly four decades, received his law degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He focuses his practice on all areas of employment and traditional labor law.

The economy may be on an upswing, but that doesn’t ensure smooth sailing for companies in the building industry. The reality is that more construction companies fail during an economic upturn than during a downturn or recession. So, how can contractors and subcontractors make sure they get paid for their work?

Jeremy Vermilyea, an attorney and shareholder with the Portland office of Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt, will present the basics of lien laws in Oregon and Southwest Washington along with ways contractors and subcontractors can protect themselves during an educational seminar hosted by the Pacific Northwest chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors and sponsored by Liberty Mutual Insurance.

The seminar will be held July 18, from 4 to 6 p.m., at ABC’s offices.

From the Portland office of Ater Wynne comes news that Brenda L. Meltebeke has been re-elected chairwoman of the firm. Meltebeke, who also serves as chairwoman of the firm’s Emerging Business Group, began serving as the firm’s chairwoman in 2011.

Ernie Bootsma, L. David Connell, Michael J. Sandmire and Joel R. Paiser will continue their terms on the firm’s management committee. Paisner is partner-in-charge at Ater Wynne’s Seattle office.

Additionally, Douglas D. Morris has been elected new managing partner. He succeeds Michael W. Shackleford.

Morris served as chairman of the firm’s Business group from 2009 to 2013. His practice includes mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, securities and general corporate representation of high-technology and high-growth companies.

Shackleford will continue serving on the firm’s management committee and will focus full time on his practice, which focuses on business and estate planning.
