The Church of Scientology is in the process of selling the Stevens Building in downtown Portland, and the buyer may transform it into a hotel.

According to an early assistance intake filed with the Bureau of Development Services, a private group wants to discuss the possibility of adding a floor to the 12-story building, and converting the existing office space into a hotel with pool and spa, as well as a restaurant/bar.

The 99-year-old building, at 812 S.W. Washington St., is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

When the church purchased the building in 2008 for $5.38 million, officials intended to turn it into their new Portland headquarters. They decided that the building didn’t have enough space, and in 2010 bought the Sherlock Building on Southwest Third Avenue for $6.4 million. Church officials reopened that building in May as their Portland headquarters following an extensive renovation.

Officials have been trying to sell the Stevens Building since 2010. Erin Banks, a spokeswoman for the church, said it’s in the process of selling the building; however, she added that she doesn’t know the buyer’s identity.
