Portland officials are seeking public input while developing new mixed-use zoning and planning designations for areas outside the central city.

The Bureau of Planning and Sustainability is recruiting volunteers, including those with experience designing or building mixed-use developments, to serve on an advisory committee, said Barry Manning, a senior planning and project manager for the Mixed Use Zones Project. Officials are targeting existing mixed-use and commercial zoning in parts of the city that have experienced a lot of growth and development, including historic streetcar neighborhoods and Northwest and Southwest Portland, he said.

“This project is looking at rethinking some of the mixed-use zones in Portland,” Manning said. “We’re getting a better handle on what the market is wanting in those zones and can do some fine-tuning.”

For the advisory committee, the city is hoping to recruit residents and business owners from the targeted areas, as well as building industry professionals who have worked on mixed-use, commercial or multifamily residential development, he said.

Advisory committee members will be expected to offer feedback throughout the project’s duration, and meet monthly between early 2014 and 2015, he said.
