San Francisco-based architect Donald MacDonald on Monday will discuss his design of the new Portland transit bridge as part of an event at the Oregon Historical Society in downtown.

MacDonald, principal of MacDonald Architects, has completed designs for more than 35 bridges throughout the U.S., including the new eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. He will talk about his approach to the Portland project, and issues he considered.

The discussion also will feature Chet Orloff, chairman of the Bridge Naming Committee and director emeritus of the Oregon Historical Society. He will discuss the bridge naming process.

Four names are being considered: Abigail Scott Duniway Transit Bridge, Cascadia Crossing Transit Bridge, Tillicum Crossing Transit Bridge (Bridge of the People)andWy’east Transit Bridge. Public input will be considered until March 1, and then TriMet will make a final decision.

Orloff will discuss the criteria the Bridge Naming Committee is using, and how the four final names reflect the region’s history and culture.

The discussion is free and open to the public. It will begin at 7 p.m. The Oregon Historical Society is located at 1200 S.W. Park Ave.
