Associated Builders and Contractors’ Pacific Northwest chapter held its annual Excellence in Construction and Safety awards event Friday at the Oregon Convention Center. The five honorees were:

Eagle Award – Grand Prize

Wilsonville-based Hydro-Temp Mechanical received the top honor for its work on the University of Oregon’s Hatfield-Dowlin Complex, a 145,000-square-foot building recognized nationally for its innovation and design.

Hydro-Temp provided mechanical work for the project, which required incredible quality control and cooperation, according to ABC.

The firm led a detailed BIM process that modeled every aspect of the project from plumbing fixtures to access doors – down to 1/16th of an inch. Hydro-Temp also overcame several challenges on the project and logged more than 137,000 hours without any accidents.

General Contractor – New Build

Beaverton-based Yorke & Curtis won its category for construction of a speculative retail project in the Tanasbourne area off of Southwest 185th Avenue between Beaverton and Hillsboro.

ABC noted that the contractor built the new retail space within a short construction schedule just before the holiday shopping season.

Yorke & Curtis’ team deployed a system of safety traffic lanes, fences, barricades and flaggers to maintain order on the project while they erected new buildings and reconfigured the parking lot with landscaping throughout.

The project was completed on time and allowed new tenants to secure occupancy in time for holiday shopping.

General Contractor – Best Tenant Improvement

Grow Construction was honored for its interior work on the Oak Apartments complex in downtown Portland.

The Grow team overcame challenges associated with heavy foot traffic with only two small doors for access to the site and occupancy of the apartment complex. Despite these challenges, the project was completed on schedule.

Specialty Contractor – Other Specialty Construction

Faced with reroofing the 55,000-square-foot Skamania Lodge in March, Portland-based Interstate Roofing maintained a low profile. The firm reroofed the main entry way of the hotel along with the rest of the 55,000-square-foot property, said Noni Hughes, director of rooms at Skamania Lodge in Stevenson, Wash.

Interstate Roofing kept all of its equipment out of view from guests and ensured signs of its work stayed as invisible as possible, working only daytime hours during the week.

“It was a major reroofing project, and they did a fantastic job,” Hughes said.

Specialty Contractor — Mechanical

Hunter Davisson replaced the heating, cooling and ventilation systems on the Hotel Vintage Plaza building in downtown Portland — within only 24 hours. In a tight time frame, every part of the building’s rooftop systems was disassembled, removed by crane and modified; also, new equipment was lifted into place. Hunter Davisson not only completed the work on time, but did so even though the crane arrived with a dead battery and caused a delay of a few hours.
