The bowling pins at an alley on North Interstate Avenue may not be the only things getting knocked down there in the distant future.

The San Francisco office of Vestal, N.Y.-based Newman Development Group has filed for early assistance with the Portland Bureau of Development Services regarding plans for an approximately $20 million redevelopment at the site of the Interstate Lanes bowling alley at 6049 N. Interstate Ave. The proposed project would redevelop the existing 22,727-square-foot structure as a 144,557-square-foot multifamily building with 184 residential units.

Plans call for construction of four stories of wood framing over a concrete podium, which would have 17,140 square feet of commercial space and common areas. The project would also include 100 parking stalls, according to the early assistance application filed with the city.

Gary Griff, senior director at Cushman & Wakefield, recently listed the property for sale for $2.5 million. He confirmed that the property now is under contract with a potential buyer; however, he could not say who because of confidentiality agreements. Neither the property’s owner – Don Ellis, who also owns Allen’s Crosley Lanes in Vancouver, Wash. – nor Norman Development Group representatives could be reached for comment.

Construction might not happen immediately, however. Kim Sparano, the manager at Interstate Lanes, said the alley had already signed contracts for league play in 2015. She said she was not aware of a pending sale.

Sparano said interest in league play has been especially high because Hollywood Bowl, on Northeast Halsey Street, is due to close May 18. The sale of that bowling alley is pending, and a redevelopment is planned for the site.
