Work on the west side of the Sellwood Bridge continued Friday, when Ross Island Sand & Gravel truck drivers began a 36-hour process of delivering roughly 12 million pounds of concrete.

Crews from Tempe, Ariz.-based Sundt Construction Co., which is partnering with Stayton-based Slayden Construction Group Inc. as the construction manager-general contractor for the project, poured the concrete, which will solidify a large anchor footing at Pier 3.

Roughly 250 deliveries were planned between 2 a.m. on Friday and 4 p.m. on Saturday, said Ted Aadland, Sundt’s project manager.

The anchor footings will connect each side’s steel arches, which will be connected by Piers 4 and 5 in the river, he said.

“It’s a big footing and a big pier, so we’re glad to get it poured out and completed,” he said.

High water is slowing the project a bit, but crews are at their busiest with various projects occurring simultaneously, Aadland said.

Sundt is continuing to build abutments and an underpass on the west side. Construction of the bridge’s steel piers will begin in October. The east-side anchor footing was poured earlier this year, Aadland said.

“We’re on time and on budget,” he said. “The job’s going well. We have a great safety record.”
