Two internships will be available for Franklin High School students who want a full design and architecture experience this summer.

DOWA-IBI Group Architects Inc., the lead architect for the school’s $65.5 million renovation and modernization project, will select the two students following an application and interview process, Associate Principal Karina Ruiz said. Students will be an active part of the design team, she said.

“Once they’re here, we want kids to experience all aspects of an architectural project while they contribute to the design of the reimagined Franklin High School,” she said.

Construction of the project, now in the schematic design phase, is slated to begin in summer 2015. The expected completion date is fall 2017.

Students will receive school credit for the internship through Portland Public Schools’ Practicum and Internship Program. They will likely work about 20 hours per week, Ruiz said.

“We’ll take them to the construction job site, take them to client meetings and expose them to all aspects of our daily work,” she said.

While gaining on-the-job experience, students also will walk through a separate eight-week-long project simulating all phases of the job. They will interview, secure the project, create the design and put together models.

By the end of the internship, students will present their own mock school design project, Ruiz said.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for us to engage with the students and teach them what we do for a living,” she said. “They’re going to be part of the project. It’s going to be a good experience.”
