Roughly 110 years ago, Finnish farmers settled on 163 acres on Grays River in Washington state. With their families, they cleared a spruce swamp, built a dike on the river, and raised cattle.

A century later, their heirs sold the land to Columbia River Land Trust. Plans were made to return the area to inter-tidal wetland.
The work wouldn鈥檛 be easy. The dikes had been breached, allowing tides to flood the area twice a day. In addition, the area experiences about 100 inches of rainfall per year and winds often exceed 100 miles per hour. The wetland restoration would need to be done quickly 鈥� in less than three months.

The motto of the project general contractor, BCI Contracting, is: 鈥淥ur machines walk on water.鈥� The firm designed and had built a flotation undercarriage for a Caterpiller 330DL excavator, allowing it to perform in an environment that would swallow most heavy equipment.聽 The efficiency of the equipment allowed a reconstruction of the wetland habitat in just 50 days.
