The University of Oregon School of Architecture and Allied Arts this summer will offer a sustainable urban design class exploring creation of a mixed-use building on a vacant downtown Portland lot.

The course, part of the university’s Summer in the City program (), is open to community members. It will take place from June 23 through Aug. 15 on Mondays through Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the White Stag Block, 70 N.W. Couch St. in Portland.

James Cutler, founding principal of Bainbridge Island, Wash.-based Cutler Anderson Architects, will teach the course. He will be joined by Lisa Petterson, a SERA Architects associate principal; she will teach a concurrent seminar on application of sustainable principles to the building that students design.

In the course, Cutler will lead an investigation into creation of a mixed-use building that responds to the surrounding urban context. He and Petterson are still determining the best lot for students to focus on.

“We are trying to encourage students to understand the street and the historical relationship of the street to business,” Cutler said. “Buildings don’t come out of nothing.”
