Building the Industrial Barre facility with roughly 95 percent repurposed materials truly became a labor of love for Joel Andersen, vice president of Andersen Construction.

The yoga and pilates studio at 1911 N.E. Portland will be owned and operated by Andersen’s wife, Misti, and her business partner, Sarah Zemp. It will have an industrial look, said Joel Andersen, who passes by the site daily on the way to work.

鈥淚 haven’t managed a project for years, but I couldn’t help myself,鈥� he said. 鈥淚 was there a lot.鈥�

The project would not have been possible without vast quantities of materials available from various Andersen job sites, Andersen said. All of the mirrors for the new studio came from the former Willamette Athletic Club. The steel, which otherwise would have been scrapped, came from other job sites and became finished products, he said.

鈥淎ll of the outfitting of the space came from buildings that we were going to tear down,鈥� he said. 鈥淲e used it instead to repurpose their space.鈥�

Sixty-foot-long glu-lam beams recovered from the Pringle Square multifamily project in Salem were repurposed into floors and walls for the 3,000-square-foot space, Andersen said.

Even the company’s logo will include aspects of adaptive reuse, he said. 鈥淚ndustrial Barre鈥� will be shortened to 鈥淚-Barre,鈥� and the first letter stands for I-beams 鈥� wide, horizontal steel beams used in construction.
