The Monroe Apartments project in Northeast Portland is back on the rise. The five-story, 48-unit apartment project at Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Monroe Street was near completion of the framing stage when it was destroyed by arson last summer, sparking new city fire protection regulations for some wood-frame projects.

General contractor Pavilion Construction returned to the site in May to begin the rebuilding process. Work on the Tahran Architecture & Planning LLC-designed project is slated for completion by late February 2015.

Antonio Neri, a carpenter with A&E Builders, works on framing the Monroe Apartments in Northeast Portland. Work resumed earlier this summer on the project after a fire believed to be the work of an arsonist burned the original five-story structure near the completion of framing last summer.

A home on the lot due south of the project that was heavily damaged in the fire still stands, while a former duplex due west has been razed and is being redeveloped as a 12-unit multifamily project by WDC Properties.
