An engineer, an architect, a diversity equity manager for a construction company and a diversity officer for the city of Portland will come together during the Daily Journal of Commerce’s 2014 Women of Vision Conference to discuss their successes and challenges as business professionals involved in the building industry.

The panel discussion will close out the Sept. 24 morning conference at the Sentinel Hotel in downtown Portland, and be moderated by Lois Cohen, the founder of Lois D. Cohen Associates. Joining Cohen for the panel discussion will be Becca Cavell, Rhonnda Edmiston, Emily Miletich and Tiffani Penson.

Cavell next year will step into the managing principal role at THA Architecture. She first joined the firm in 1998, focusing her design work on libraries, higher education projects, civic projects and historic renovations. She is a co-founder of the Street of Eames, an annual tour. She received her architecture degree from the University of Liverpool. A 2006 recipient of the Van Evera Bailey scholarship, Cavell regularly teaches architecture studios at the University of Oregon Portland center.

Edmiston is the diversity and business equity manager for Howard S. Wright. She began working in the field of diversity while employed with U.S. Bank. In 2001, she joined the Port of Portland, where she led the Mentor-Prot茅g茅 Program, the Small Business Development Program and the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Program.

Miletich is an engineer with Multnomah County, and is working on the Sellwood Bridge project. She received her bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Oregon State University in 2011. Earlier this year, she was a featured speaker during a session at the 2014 Pacific Northwest: Built Industry Forum organized by the Portland chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction.

Penson is the minority evaluator program and supplier diversity officer for the city of Portland. 聽She served as the city’s small business liaison from 2004-09. While working as the bureau support manager for Mayor Sam Adams‘ Summer Youth Connect Program from 2009-12, she managed the SummerWorks program and coordinated 100 youths who spent summers working at the city. She was the first person to win the Youth Champion Award in 2008 from the Portland City Council and won the city’s Wonder Woman Award in 2013 and 2014.

The Women of Vision Conference will begin at 8 a.m. with a keynote presentation by Karen Hough, the founder and CEO of ImproveEdge, and an Amazon bestselling author. A second session will feature a presentation on personal branding by Nicki Pozos of HDR. The panel discussion will be the third, and final, session of the morning.

The conference will be followed by the 2014 Women of Vision Awards Luncheon, which will be held at the Sentinel Hotel from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Forty-five women involved in the building industry in Oregon and Southwest Washington will be honored during the luncheon.
