In just seven years at Howard S. Wright, a Balfour Beatty Company, Sarah Thorson’s career has advanced by leaps and bounds.
She began with the firm in 2007 as project coordinator. Six months later, she was promoted to project engineer in Howard S. Wright’s Special Projects Group, where she learned everything she could about project planning, cost and document control, estimating and scheduling. In 2011, Howard S. Wright Oregon Division President Jim Sather recommended Thorson’s promotion to project manager, in light of her ability to foster strong working relationships with clients and her outstanding team leadership skills.
As project manager for the company’s Special Projects Group, Thorson has emerged as 鈥渁 tireless advocate of training, growth, collaboration and team building,鈥 according to Sather. She takes that advocate role seriously, often spending her evenings and weekends traveling to other cities and states to find the perfect talent match for the company’s culture.
Her mentorship efforts within the company have earned the respect and admiration of colleagues.
鈥淪arah is calm, poised, a perfect example of a young woman leader,鈥 wrote project engineer Rachel Chaney. 鈥淚 will continue to look up to her as I move forward with my career.鈥
Thorson’s dedication to mentoring and training also has led to her involvement with Howard S. Wright’s Executive Roundtable, which works to mentor minority- and women-owned firms and small emerging businesses.
In addition to her work-related efforts, Thorson is involved in her community. She is a recent graduate of the Portland Business Alliance’s Leadership Portland Program and is a dedicated supporter of the American Heart Association.
