In the past 20 years, Interstate Roofing grew from a 鈥渙ne-man show鈥� into a multimillion-dollar corporation with a woman sitting at its helm.

In 1999, 10 years after Mike Satran founded Interstate Roofing, the company reached a benchmark, installing more than 200 roofs a year. When Satran retired in 2009, he handed the reins to his son Brad and his daughter Shelley Metzler, who now serves as president of the firm. Under her direction, the business has grown to the point that it now installs well over 2,000 roofs each year.

Metzler holds a degree in international business from Oregon State University. She interned at GAF Materials in Wayne, N.J., where she learned the manufacturing side of the business. After two years, she brought her newfound wealth of experience back to her family鈥檚 business.

As a woman in a male-dominated industry, Metzler has been fearless about ensuring excellence for her company鈥檚 clients, and has earned the respect of her employees and industry peers.

Under her direction, Interstate Roofing has committed itself to sustainability. In the past year alone, the company recycled more than 10 million pounds of roofing waste.

In addition to serving on the board of directors of the Pacific Northwest chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors, Metzler also is committed to the community. She actively supports the ALS Association of Oregon and Washington, the Champoeg State Park & Heritage Area, Donate Life Northwest and St. Cecelia School.
