Susan Anderson has spent more than three decades working in the built environment, with an emphasis on sustainability.

Her career path began in 1984 with a job at the Oregon Department of Energy, where she led a campaign to boost energy efficiency and renewable energy efforts by helping local governments throughout the state shape building codes.

She eventually moved into private consulting, working on energy and environmental projects for four years.

In the early 1990s, she joined the city of Portland. In the past 20 years with the city, she has headed up the Portland Energy Office and served as director of both the city’s Office of Sustainable Development and currently as director of the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability.

Working for the city, Anderson established the city’s Energy Challenge program in the mid-1990s. In 2000, she led the creation of Portland’s green building program, an effort that included early LEED requirements for new facility construction. Under her guidance, the city’s solid water operations successfully reached a citywide recycling rate of 70 percent.

As the leader of a city department with more than 100 employees, Susan has worked tirelessly to increase significantly the number of women and minorities employed by the bureau. For the past eight years, she also has served as mentor for five women involved in a leadership training program. The women she has mentored have all gone on to hold positions in management in the areas of development, planning and transportation.
