When Susan Steward first stepped into the role of executive director for the organization then known as BOMA Portland, the organization mainly existed to provide administrative services to five commercial real estate organizations.

Less than one decade later, under Steward’s leadership, the organization is considered the main representative and promoter of the more than 40 million square feet of commercial real estate in Oregon.

The organization that once limited its work to the Portland metro area has expanded its reach to the entire state, and changed its name to BOMA Oregon. A branding campaign saw the launch of a new website for the organization as well as involvement in Twitter and other forms of social media.

With an eye toward helping commercial brokers meet the state’s continuing education requirements, she led a campaign to have BOMA Oregon certified as a continuing education provider. The organization now regularly provides classes every month.
Steward pursued another certification for herself, earning a green associate designation in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design green building rating program.

Her commitment to sustainable buildings led her to partner her organization with the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance to launch the nation’s first commercial building energy efficiency competition, which has now spread across the country.

Her public service as a representative of BOMA Oregon includes her involvement as an appointed member of the Oregon Board of Architecture Examiners and seats on advisory committees for several city of Portland bureaus.
