TriMet officials have abandoned plans to construct an off-street bus layover site in Northeast Portland after investigating the potential cost and consulting with neighbors.

The transit agency had pursued construction of a private, secure space near the intersection of Northeast Lombard Street and Sixth Avenue for Line 8 bus drivers to park and take short breaks. The project, which would have involved the purchase of a half-acre property, had an estimated price tag of $3 million; officials ultimately decided it would be too costly, TriMet spokeswoman Mary Fetsch said.

鈥淩eviewing it further, it was an expensive option,鈥� she said.

Currently, bus drivers park on the street while they use restrooms at private businesses that have agreements with TriMet. The practice has generated complaints about bus noise from neighbors living along the Line 8 route, Fetsch said. They continued to express concerns about noise disruptions even after TriMet officials proposed the off-street layover construction project.

TriMet officials are still searching for the best layover spot and would like find a permanent and less expensive solution by next year, Fetsch said.

鈥淲e are continuing to look for a place to lay over,鈥� she said. 鈥淚t may not be an off-street facility.鈥�
