A proposal for a new eight-story Hampton Inn in the Pearl District is moving ahead following a redesign. A pre-application conference for a Type-III design review with the Portland Bureau of Development Services is scheduled for Oct. 28 at 8:30 a.m.

The hotel would take up three-quarters of the block between Everett and Flanders streets and Park and Ninth avenues, and hold 232 guest rooms, a large lobby, a lounge and a pool area. Two levels of above-ground parking would include 114 stalls.

Wisconsin-based Raymond Management Co. in October 2012 submitted land use plans for a 220-room hotel at 835 N.W. Everett St. Then, at a Portland Design Commission hearing in January 2013, several Pearl District residents expressed displeasure with designs, which depicted a u-shaped building with two types of brick, cement paneling and wood posts.

鈥淚t didn’t look like an urban building,鈥� said Patricia Gardner, president of the Pearl District Neighborhood Association. 鈥淚n any neighborhood in the city of Portland, the design needs to fit in. The design needed to be urban, not suburban.鈥�

Gardner said the developers have approached the neighborhood association three times since the first meeting and said they believe the newest design fits the look of the Pearl District much better than the prior one.

鈥淚 have heard that some people outside of the association were concerned about the type of hotel,鈥� Gardner said. 鈥淏ut the neighborhood is mixed-use and mixed-income.鈥�

One Pearl District resident at the 2013 hearing called the Hampton Inn a 鈥渕oderate-to-low-budget hotel鈥� and said its aesthetics would clash with those of surrounding buildings.

New renderings show a building with modern lines and a large amount of glass on the facade.

Sheila Frugoli, conference coordinator for the BDS, said the information the developers have submitted does not indicate what materials would be used for the building, but added that the project planner would discuss that with the developers during the design process.
