An Oregon roofing company has added an asset under its business umbrella.

Columbia Services, doing business as Columbia Roofing and Sheet Metal, has acquired Long Beach Roofing, a 77-year-old company in Long Beach, Calif.

Long Beach Roofing, previously owned by Conrad Banks, has 11 employees and specializes in commercial reroofing in the Los Angeles Basin, according to Mark Carpenter, president of Columbia Roofing and Sheet Metal.

Carpenter, a self-professed entrepreneur, said he has 鈥渟old some businesses and started some.鈥 He founded Columbia Roofing in 1996, but Long Beach Roofing is his first foray into the world of acquisitions. The deal, he said, was one he said he couldn’t pass up.

鈥淚 knew the company on a personal basis; I knew the employees and the owner,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t was time for (the owner to retire), and I was in a spot to buy. It was good timing.鈥

Columbia Roofing is based in Tualatin and has a Seattle office. The company has a California license and has performed work in the state as far south as Los Angeles. The addition of Long Beach Roofing, which will keep its name and operate as a division of Columbia Construction Services, offers an opportunity to capture more of that market.

鈥淭here are lots of opportunities (in the Long Beach area), lots of good connections,鈥 Carpenter said. 鈥(The employees in Long Beach) are genuine guys, really neat people 鈥 both the field employees and the office people.鈥
