TriMet is planning to use $12 million to boost security and safety at 14 stations along the MAX light-rail line.

The work will take place over five years; blue line stations, primarily, will benefit, according to TriMet public information officer Mary Fetsch.

鈥淚t’s part of our 鈥榖est practices’ policy,鈥� she said. 鈥淲e constantly evaluate all aspects of our operation.聽We’ve recognized areas where improvements could be made to ensure the safety of our passengers, such as installing new crosswalks and altering landscaping to afford better camera surveillance.鈥�

Fetsch also said that some of the improvements are part of normal maintenance.聽The east-side line, for example, began operation in 1986, and some trees have since grown to obscure camera views.聽Beginning in January, crews will begin removing trees to increase security camera views and make way for more and better lighting. The trees that are removed will go to an organization that provides firewood for low-income residents.

Cameras will be upgraded, shelters will gain improved windscreens and other amenities will be installed.

Additionally, four new crosswalks 鈥� one on Division Street and three on 10th Avenue 鈥� will be installed. The crosswalks聽will improve safety for riders crossing streets to and from stations.

Upgrades also will relate to upcoming changes for electronic fare access at some stations.

The work will not affect riders or schedules, and is not expected to impact the reliability of service, Fetsch said.
