Portland-based DiLoreto Architecture has earned national recognition for prominent use of wood in the design of St. Edward Catholic Church in Keizer.

The $4 million project won a 2015 Wood Design Award from WoodWorks, an initiative of the Wood Products Council. Winners of the competition that celebrates excellence in wood design, engineering and construction were announced last week at WoodWorks’ 2015 Bay Area Wood Solutions Fair in Oakland, Calif.

The 11,681-square-foot St. Edward church was completed this past spring and features glulam beams, arches and other interior woodwork using locally sourced Douglas fir and Oregon white oak. Exterior woodwork uses a combination of locally sourced Douglas fir and cedar.

The wooden interior arches, a nod to traditional church architecture, are visible from the facade through a skylight that wraps around the building.

St. Edward patrons told the DiLoreto design team they wanted a building that paid homage to Pacific Northwest scenery, said DiLoreto designer Brian Melton, who submitted the project for the WoodWorks award.
