Installation of 13 acres of new carpet is just the beginning of a major redevelopment effort taking place at Portland International Airport.

Port of Portland officials are planning a series of improvements 鈥� $190 million in total 鈥� over the next few years. This includes additions of restaurants and shops, a remodel of the customs area for passengers arriving from international destinations, an expansion and upgrade of the security checkpoints and extension of one concourse. Preliminary planning is expected to begin this summer on redevelopment of the terminal core, which includes the ticket lobby, baggage claims and Oregon Market shopping area.

An airport community advisory committee on Wednesday will discuss a proposal to relocate a charter plane terminal and rental car service facility to make room for a future expansion of the main commercial airline terminal, Port of Portland spokesman Steve Johnson said. The committee’s meeting will be open to the public and take place from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the port headquarters, 7200 N.E. Airport Way.

Committee members will discuss preliminary plans to build a new terminal and hangars for Atlantic Aviation, which services private plane owners and charter flights, Johnson said. An existing rental car washing and refueling station would also be rebuilt at a site east of the airport’s long-term parking lot, he said.

鈥淭he move would allow the PDX terminal to grow into the future,鈥� he said.

Meanwhile, Emerick Construction crews are expected to wrap up the $13 million carpet replacement project in November.

A $19.8 million project to add shops and restaurants is scheduled to continue. Eleven are scheduled to open by June and more will follow in summer 2016.

Renovations to the airport customs area totaling approximately $940,000 are scheduled to finish this fall. Plans call for opening up floor space, improving lighting, applying new paint, installing new carpet and installing informational wall monitors to display tourism destinations in Oregon. Also, additions are planned to new canopies to protect travelers from the elements as they board buses moving from customs to baggage claims.

Another ongoing, $57 million project involves relocating and expanding security checkpoint exit lanes and creating new passenger waiting areas. Other improvements include replacing the locking systems on the airport security doors, installing new airfield gates and check stations, and building a new training facility for teaching airport workers about safety and security regulations. Construction is scheduled to conclude in August 2016.

This fall, work will begin to extend Concourse E and improve adjacent facilities for passengers boarding planes on the tarmac. This will tie into efforts to balance the number of passengers using the north and south sides of the airport terminal by relocating a couple of highly popular airlines to opposite concourses. The $98 million project is scheduled to finish by late 2017.
