A new STEM building is under construction at Clark College in Vancouver, Wash. The $41 million building will contain three stories over a half-basement and total over 70,000 square feet. Skanska USA Building is the project’s general contractor; the building was designed by LSW Architects, and Kramer Gehlen & Associates is serving as the structural engineer.

The building is being constructed of bonded post-tensioned concrete, allowing for floors to cantilever out on the building’s north and south sides and reducing the number of structural columns. Crews are busy building forms for the building’s roof, and all concrete work is expected to be completed next month, at which point work will begin on the building’s skin and interiors.

The building will feature 26 instructional spaces and classroom/lab areas. The three-story lobby will run the height of the building and will contain a 44-foot drop tower for physics and engineering students to conduct experiments. The building also features an engineering machine shop, cadaver laboratory, and outdoor instruction space. The building is slated to open in the fall of 2016.
