A historic bank building in downtown Portland is undergoing a transformation into creative office space. The First National Bank Building, located at Southwest 5^th Avenue and Stark Street, was designed by Boston-based Coolidge & Shattuck in the neoclassical style and completed in 1916. It was of Historic Places in 1974.

San Francisco-based developer Seven Hills Properties purchased the building in January for $3.2 million, and Fortney Contractors began work on the Baysinger Partners Architecture-designed renovation the following month.

Improvements on the approximately 45,000-square-foot building include demolition of existing offices, teller areas, non-historic finishes, and T-bar ceilings. A  main stairway will be built between the first and second floors, and a sky bridge will be installed to connect the third floor across the building’s atrium. New mechanical/electrical/plumbing systems are being installed, and restroom layouts are being reconfigured and upgraded to ADA standards. The project is slated for completion next month.
