What’s in a name? One letter fewer, for Boora Architects. Its name is now Bora Architects. The move will help position the firm for the future, principal Steven Weeks said.

Founded in the 1950s, the firm was originally named Broome Selig Oringdulph, Weeks said. But it eventually became Boora 鈥� an acronym for Broome, Oringdulph, O’Toole, Rudolf and Associates.

鈥淲e’ve had lots of different names over the years and Boora was an acronym for a long time,鈥� he said. 鈥淏ut a while ago it ceased to be an acronym and was just a word. So we tweaked it a little bit to make it shorter.鈥�

Bora has undergone a leadership transition in the past few years, Weeks said, and in some ways the shortened name is a reflection of that.

鈥淲e have a new generation of principals in the firm 鈥� a natural evolution of how business can evolve over time,鈥� he said. 鈥淲e have young people doing interesting work and thought (the name change) would indicate that change outwardly.鈥�

The name is pronounced 鈥渂o-rah,鈥� not 鈥渂oo-rah,鈥� Weeks said.

鈥淲e decided to simplify and make it easier to say, and we also think it looks better,鈥� he said.

Longevity is important at Bora, Weeks said, and shortening the firm’s name is just one way to think of the future.

鈥淭he firm has a good system for making sure that the firm can live on past any group (or) individual running it,鈥� he said. 鈥淚t’s a great testament to the foresight of the founders and people who have been with the firm for many years, that its success would live on beyond them.鈥�
