The Portland chapter of the American Institute of Architects disavowed a statement by the national CEO regarding the elections of Donald Trump as U.S. president and others as members of Congress.

A letter signed by AIA Portland President LeRoy Landers, President-elect Brian Cavanaugh and past-President Dave Otte was issued Monday, stating that Executive Vice President Robert Ivy鈥檚 words are his alone.

鈥淲hile AIA is a non-partisan organization,鈥� the letter stated, 鈥渁ny statement that was issued in response to the (presidential) election on behalf of the AIA should have made clear that many of the statements and actions of President-elect Trump and his campaign stand in direct opposition to the clearly held positions of the AIA.鈥�

The letter goes on to chastise Trump for statements he made during his campaign regarding the reality of climate change.

Ivy wrote on Nov. 9 that the AIA and its 89,000 members are committed to working with Trump and his plans to invest heavily in infrastructure.

鈥淲e also congratulate members of the new 115th Congress on their election,鈥� he wrote. 鈥淲e urge both the incoming Trump administration and the new Congress to work toward enhancing the design and construction sector鈥檚 role as a major catalyst for job creation throughout the American economy.鈥�

Cavanaugh said he knows Ivy and doesn鈥檛 think he was attempting to make a political statement with his initial statement. Cavanaugh added that the statement he co-signed isn鈥檛 political.

鈥淚 would argue that it鈥檚 not a political stance,鈥� he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 just an objective stance having to do with some very clear issues.鈥�
