A project at the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades’ training center in Northeast Portland is expanding the union’s space while providing an opportunity for apprentices to work on the space and gain training hours.

On Friday, 17 apprentice finishers were busy taping drywall on the expansion, which is adding classroom, office, and support space in the form of a free-standing mezzanine within the IUPAT’s existing warehouse building. The $500,000 project will allow for classroom learning and testing to be conducted in the building simultaneously with hands-on training, which wasn’t previously possible due to noise issues.

A separate training class in the space next weekend will provide block training for apprentice painters. The project is slated for completion by mid-January. It was designed by , and is the general contractor.
