The Commission approved the sale on Thursday, officials announced. The property is adjacent to the 633,000-square-foot FedEx Ground distribution center, which sits on 92.5 acres already owned by the company.

FedEx originally purchased 78 acres in the industrial park in 2008 and built the first phase of its distribution center. The company acquired 14.5 additional acres in 2016.

The distribution center can currently process around 30,000 packages per hour. Package volumes have doubled over the last decade, and FedEx has responded by opening 16 new distribution hubs and expanding or relocating more than 500 others since 2005, according to the company.

The Port of Portland originally bought the Troutdale Reynolds Industrial Park from the Alcoa aluminum company in 2007. Alcoa had purchased the land in 2000 from the Reynolds Metal Company, which until the sale operated a 1940s era aluminum smelter plant on the site.

Local, regional and state governments have since worked to clean up environmental contamination and transform the site into a mix of industrial land and natural areas.
