No one in Oregon tops Phil Knight as a philanthropist for higher education.

So, it should come as little surprise to see Knight鈥檚 fingerprints all over the Oregon Health & Science University鈥檚 campus facilities on Marquam Hill and the South Waterfront, where the university鈥檚 cancer research institute bears his name.

The most recent addition to the institute is also the biggest and also is named after Knight. The $152 million Knight Cancer Center building on Southwest Moody Avenue was designed by SRG Partnership, with the McCarthy/Andersen Construction Joint Venture serving as general contractor. The project broke ground in 2016 and completion was marked by a public ceremony in December 2018.

This allowed the project to be included in this year鈥檚 91视频 TopProjects, where it has been selected as the top Health Care Project of the Year.

鈥淲e are truly humbled and honored by this award,鈥 said Brian Price, Andersen鈥檚 operations manager for the Oregon Region. 鈥淭he KCRB was a journey of a lifetime. It is proof that when a team takes time to develop a culture of trust, transparency and vulnerability at the beginning of the project, the results will far exceed the expectations.

Managed with integrated project delivery principles, the OHSU Knight Cancer Research Building is now home to 650 researchers, administrators and support staff. The seven-story, 320,000 square-foot building鈥檚 design features include open-air balconies, communicating stairs, a rooftop terrace and a central 鈥渃ollaboration kitchen.鈥

The collaborative work done by the project team was a highlight of the entire process. A 鈥減roject first鈥 approach also was key in overcoming technical challenges that included the design and construction of a lighter, two-level steel structure on top of the seven levels of concrete-framed structure comprising the main laboratory space.

Additional structural innovations, according to Andersen officials, involved a major transfer girder at the seventh-floor deck to carry an inverted column. This tricky process was required to remove obstructions in the main floor conference auditorium.
