Autodesk is providing the Associated General Contractors of America with $75,000 for a one-time grant program intended to provide contractor members鈥� women employees who work at heights with properly-fitting personal protective equipment. The goal is to distribute approximately 300 harnesses; they鈥檙e available to member companies whose work requires the use of personal fall arrest systems.

Falls have long been the leading cause of fatalities on construction sites. Further, the ongoing workforce shortage in the industry 鈥� nationally, 80 percent of contractors report difficulties filling hourly craft positions 鈥� places a premium on retention of employees, including women, who represent roughly 10 percent of the industry鈥檚 workforce.

鈥淐onstruction is, and will continue to be, a people-driven business,鈥� Allison Scott, head of construction thought leadership at Autodesk, stated in a press release. 鈥淭he industry needs more people, and women must feel safe and welcome on jobsites if we want them to choose a career in construction.鈥�

This follows similar action taken earlier this year by Skanska USA Building. The company created gloves and two safety vests designed for women based on feedback from its own employees.

Grant awards will be based on the percentage of a company鈥檚 women employees whose work requires the use of personal fall arrest systems.
