Starting Monday, the Portland Bureau of Development Services will allow limited permit intake by appointment only. The bureau will be closed to walk-in customers.

Priority will be given to hospitals and clinics, essential services such as heat and essential facilities such as the Portland International Airport terminal upgrades and Bureau of Environmental Services‘ wastewater treatment plant.

Appointment will consist of drop-off only, not an in-person meeting with staff. Applicants are to drop off a completed application with all submittal materials during the appointment.

To make an appointment, call 503-823-7300 and leave a message.

Nearly all staff members are working remotely, and the bureau is bracing for the possibility of employees calling in sick, the bureau stated in a news release.

“We are working hard to provide as much service as possible to the public during this current health emergency,” the bureau stated. “Nearly all of our staff are tele-working, and we continue to assess our capabilities to provide permit intake, plan review and inspections. Customers should be prepared for limitations on some new permit intakes as well as a slowdown in review timelines. We ask for your patience as we continue to refine our procedures.”

Permit pickups are also going forward with new procedures. To pick up “approved to issue” plans, call 503-823-7357 and leave a message including your permit number/IVR and the first and last name of the person picking up the plans.

Plans can be picked up to take off-site for corrections. Permitting Services, however, is not accepting corrections to plans. That will be re-evaluated based on staffing levels for the week of March 30, BDS stated.

These procedures could change, the bureau stated. For more information, visit the bureau’s website at .
