Last November, Lease Crutcher Lewis partnered with Snyder Roofing of Oregon to collaborate on a green re-roofing project in downtown Portland 鈥� the Brewery Blocks 4.

The location presented many safety and logistical challenges, given the high traffic in the area and crowded surroundings. The first safety challenge was on level four at the gym, where hot rubber asphalt was being applied.

Hot rubber asphalt fumes can be highly hazardous. To address the potential hazard, the air supply was discussed and ductwork was added, bringing in fresh air outside the building and 10 feet below the roofing.

The second safety challenge was around adhesive odors at ground level. Forensic Analytical was hired to perform air monitoring and air control through odor analyses at four locations on the ground, on both fluid applied adhesive and asphalt fumes.

The third safety focus was the crane setup on Couch Street. All lifting operations had to be scrutinized due to the high-traffic area and the ground below where the crane was to operate, which contained a parking structure. Planning for crane lifts included pedestrian traffic redirection, street and bike closures, and utilizing Snyder鈥檚 crane for all operations given weight restrictions and the parking structure.
Overall, BB4 required extensive collaboration between Lease Crutcher Lewis and Snyder Roofing鈥檚 safety and jobsite managers.

Robert Jepsen, project executive at Lease Crutcher Lewis, said that with this project and others, communication is always key to ensuring safety at a jobsite.
