chief safety officer for MHA Resources
Safe places, spaces job No. 1 for McMurry

Rick McMurry knows how to stay busy. He manages safety operations for Ward-Henshaw Construction, P&C Construction and Baker-York Equipment and Supply. These companies employ more than 100 people, and he is charged with safety training for all of them and mentoring their leaders.

McMurry said his job is rewarding because of the relationships he鈥檚 developed and he enjoys seeing people succeed.

鈥淥ur safety culture has become one that is addicted to continual improvement and I鈥檓 kind of an operationally minded guy, and there is always a way to do things more efficiently,鈥 he said.

As part of the executive management team, McMurry builds top-level consensus on all safety decisions and chairs the wellness committee. He vetted and implemented Vivid Learning, a cloud-based safety tool that delivers up-to-date training and bilingual courses.

McMurry is a member of AGC鈥檚 Board of Directors and is past chair of the AGC Oregon-Columbia Chapter Health and Safety Council. He works with Willamette Promise and AGC promoting construction and safety careers to high school and junior high educators, as well as students through the Educator Externship Program and outreach activities.

He often speaks at other subcontractor and general contractor safety meetings, and meets with other safety professionals in group settings or one-on-one to build understanding about why a strong safety culture is important and how to use the safety forms he designed.

鈥淔or Rick and the companies he oversees, it鈥檚 not enough to simply react to lagging indicators. Instead, the processes and groups that he has put into place are focused on anticipation and continuous improvement,鈥 said Steven Malany, P&C Construction鈥檚 president. 鈥淢ore importantly, he鈥檚 helped to create not just a safe physical environment for employees to work in, but a safe place for those same employees to openly discuss concerns or innovations they might have to further improve the company鈥檚 culture.鈥
