MacDonald-Miller Facility Solutions promotes its safety culture from Day 1, requiring all employees to attend a New Hire Safety Orientation where they receive a comprehensive summary of MMFS鈥檚 safety policies.
All foremen are required to take the OSHA 30 class and MMFS鈥檚 Foreman Safety 101 class. It also offers continuing education through MacTed, an acronym for MacMiller Training and Education. MacTed offers topics ranging from anti-harassment to defensive driving and Lean process management.
One of the main concepts of Lean is continuous improvement and MMFS鈥檚 employees are encouraged to share ideas to help the company improve. Not only are workers coming up with creative ideas to improve their workspaces in a productive manner, they also use the opportunity to point out potentially hazardous processes that need to be made safer.
鈥淭he safety department also works hard to get to know and earn the respect and trust of employees,鈥 said Lee Pyfrom, director of safety. 鈥淲e understand that if employees do not respect and trust us they will not bring up safety concerns. However, since the employees do trust us they are open and honest, which allows us to work proactively to address safety issues before we ever become exposed to hazards.鈥
In response to COVID-19, Pyfrom created an app to help track whether employees are experiencing symptoms or have been exposed to the virus. A fraction of its employees work in the office and must wear face coverings in common areas. Wayfinding signage directs foot traffic so people do not have to pass each other.
Crews in the field must participate in daily illness checks, wear face coverings and no longer share tools. They don鈥檛 work within six feet of each other unless absolutely necessary, and if they do they must wear a face shield.
