Johnell Bell鈥檚 mix of political savvy and commitment to fostering diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in both the public and private sectors has placed him in a unique position as founder and president of Espousal Strategies.

Bell worked in government for nearly two decades, serving as state field director for Sen. Jeff Merkley where he managed the senator鈥檚 five statewide field offices and staff responsible for external relations. He was a staff member for former Portland Mayor Tom Potter and Mayor Ted Wheeler when he chaired the Multnomah County Commission.

As director of diversity and transit equity for TriMet, Bell managed participation of minority- and women-owned companies building the MAX Orange Line from Portland to Milwaukie. During that project, TriMet awarded $175 million in contracts to more than 150 DBEs.

鈥淭here I really grew a great appreciation for NAMC and other organizations striving to promote diversity and equity,鈥� said Bell, who serves on the Leadership Council for the National Small Business Association, the nation鈥檚 oldest and largest business association, to advance issues important to Oregon businesses.

He launched his company last year after reaching a crossroads about whether to continue working in government and political operations or start his own firm. Espousal Strategies provides government and public community affairs consultation and strategic communications support to coordinate and manage group processes.

The firm also helps organizations develop DEI action plans, and Bell partners with a variety of private and public groups that include Washington County鈥檚 government and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Political campaigns continue to be part of Bell鈥檚 work and his firm is involved in campaign work and strategic communications on behalf of a number of clients. In addition, he is working with the Portland Diamond Project to bring Major League Baseball to the Rose City, where he manages government relations and communications.

Bell said he most enjoys the variety of projects he works on and the people he works with.

鈥淥f all the positions I鈥檝e held, being a small business owner is the hardest thing I鈥檝e ever done but it鈥檚 also the most rewarding,鈥� he said, adding others who are considering starting a small company should do their homework about their business model and structure and the potential tax implications. 鈥淵ou also have to make sure you have the passion to put in the hours. Ultimately, it鈥檚 worth it!鈥�
