HIGHER EDUCATION

Portland Community College has named the student gathering space at its Sylvania campus in honor of philanthropists Chris and Tom Neilsen.

The honor recognizes the couple鈥檚 leadership of PCC Foundation鈥檚 first comprehensive campaign, 鈥淭he Campaign for Opportunity,鈥� which raised more than $40 million 鈥� eclipsing a $30 million goal.

The couple also received from the Association of Fundraising Professionals its Volunteer of the Year Award 鈥� one of the most prestigious volunteerism awards given in the Portland area.

The Neilsens in 2007 moved to Portland from Salem, where they owned Neilsen Manufacturing and hired skilled workers who acquired training at Chemeketa Community College.
