May Street Elementary, the first new school Hood River County School District has built in 50聽years, replaced an outdated facility on the same site that remained in operation during construction. The tight, four-acre site in a residential neighborhood required careful planning, working closely with the school administration and communicating regularly about construction activity with the local community.

The 72,000-square-foot school is centered on a commons area, the heart of the school, with six 鈥渘eighborhoods鈥� opening to it. Each neighborhood is identified by the indigenous name of a landmark in the Gorge, celebrating its long cultural history.

With capacity聽for 600 students, the elementary school features 24 classrooms, a library, gymnasium, administrative areas, and a cafeteria and kitchen. The two-story building was strategically located with a separate drop off, 38-space parking lot, playing field and playground on the constrained block.

Unforeseen items such as the over-excavation of the building pad area to provide for more substantial structural fill, three underground abandoned oil tanks that had to be decommissioned and structurally backfilled, and increased asbestos abatement of the old school all had the potential to impact the project, but were successfully absorbed into the schedule through proactive efforts of the team.
