It鈥檚 not the largest project carried out on the adidas campus in North Portland in recent years, but it鈥檚 probably the most difficult to pull off cleanly.

The Intersection at adidas Village provides office space and connectivity for the shoe giant鈥檚 rapidly growing North America headquarters off Greeley Avenue. Sited at the crossing of all primary campus circulation paths, the Intersection bridged the gap between two existing structures and connected the new building with The Canteen, a food service building that was a recipent of a 2019 91视频 Top Projects award.

The Intersection is a three-story glazed structure with a fa莽ade articulated by two sets of vertically oriented fins that provide solar shading as well as varying levels of opacity. The fa莽ade looks out over the company鈥檚 famous adidas 鈥淪uperstar Shoes鈥 sculpture, while the back side of the building features a series of cascading terraces that provide outdoor dining and meeting space.

鈥淚t was a really unique project, with a lot of challenges from an overall standpoint of what we were trying to accomplish,鈥 said WT Sermeus, a project manager for general contractor PCL Construction. 鈥淲e were sandwiched between two existing buildings, and we had to unite the two buildings and create a multifunctional space that could be used for big events.鈥

Not only is The Intersection smack dab in the middle of two existing structures, it was also built on top of the adidas data center for North America, the electronic hub that allows the company to conduct business online and connect with its massive network of retail outlets and distributors across the continent.

鈥淲e had to independently build a building that was able to be weather tight, air tight and functional,鈥 Sermeus said, 鈥渂ut not structurally touch the buildings beside it or below, while keeping those buildings functional. The term that a lot of people used for this was 鈥榞ymnastics.鈥欌
Hacker Architects designed the structure, which used cross-laminated timber panels not as a structural element, but as an aesthetic feature, prized for its warmth and sustainability.

鈥淲e wanted to incorporate that Northwest feel to the project,鈥 Sermeus said. 鈥淭hat was a branding goal. Instead of using CLT as a structural element in this project, that wasn鈥檛 achievable with the constraints we had, we were able to incorporate it in the architecture.鈥

Large glulam beams weighing almost 1,000 pounds each were also used in the project, but also in a decorative role as bleacher seating. And, unsurprisingly, the complexity of the project also called for the use of the latest building technology such as laser scanning, 3D modeling and 360-degree photo documentation.

鈥淭he way we had to build it, instead of building from the floor up, we had to build it from the top down,鈥 Sermeus said.
This, for example, meant modeling the structure so that structural steel beams could be safely passed from the top of the building down through two-foot wide holes in the roof.
