Oregon Health and Science University has been at the forefront of the last decade鈥檚 building boom in Portland鈥檚 South Waterfront district.
In 2016, OHSU began one of its most recent projects in that area when they hired ZGF Architects to design the new Center for Health and Healing Building 2 (CHH2). General contractor Hoffman Construction built the 15-story, 400,000-square-foot facility, which blends complex surgical and interventional health care with outpatient services to create a unique stay recovery model. It also allowed OHSU to bring the majority of its adult cancer care into one building and further dedicate the adjacent Knight Cancer Center more fully to research.
The building is designed with large vertical glazing that reflects the surrounding neighborhood, including nearby Caruthers Park. Ground floor commercial space also offers building users food service and pharmacy options.
The interior layout of the building is where designers were really challenged. There, the integrated planning team co-located multiple specialty services. They also designed standardized workspaces to allow providers to share facilities. At the same time, these spaces are designed to allow future changes in technology and healthcare delivery.
Key to this are shared procedural and outpatient surgery staff support areas, including a centrally located Central Sterile Processing Department. All of these things improve workflows at the new outpatient facility and represent the engine under the hood of a gleaming new facility.
鈥淔rom day one, the process and planning behind CHH2 ensured that ZGF and Hoffman delivered a facility designed by and for the staff鈥 says Stephanie O鈥橞rien, director of operations at OHSU. 鈥淭he construction of this project enabled front line staff to become involved in reviewing their own workflows, identifying waste and improving the patient experience. We were able to implement a new performance improvement system across the hospital.鈥
