The Bethlehem Inn鈥檚 new family shelter in Bend replaces a dilapidated shelter and doubles the capacity, potentially housing 10 families at one time. The Bethlehem Inn previously operated out of an old hotel that had inadequate space. Thanks to the generosity of donors during a $9 million capital campaign, the shelter was able to completely rebuild its facilities.

Building 1 is an 18,180-square-foot structure that houses 11 bedrooms, 17 bathrooms, a commercial kitchen, dining rooms and administrative offices. Building 2 is a 16,408-square-foot 鈥渟ingles building鈥� that can accommodate 106 individuals and includes activity spaces and laundry and storage facilities. Each building has a donation room, storage space, laundry facilities and offices.

The new family shelter provides an outdoor play area for children, and the commercial kitchen allows volunteers to cook meals on site rather than bringing prepared meals, as they did before. The new dining area offers more space and separates individual residents from families.

The team phased the project so the Inn remained fully operational during construction. The site鈥檚 size posed challenges and required coordination of construction activities with neighboring businesses. The project was a collaborative effort, with the design team, contractor and suppliers reducing fees and donating time and materials.
