The Burnside Bridge was constructed in 1926 and is a double-leaf Strauss trunnion bascule bridge with more than 1,000 feet of approach spans.

Nearly every part of it needed work to keep it in service until it can be seismically retrofitted or replaced with a seismically resilient bridge.

Repairs included painting the steel spans over the river; joint repair and replacement; interior remodeling to the operator houses for the lift span; temporary fencing for a myriad of work zone exclusion areas; and an extensive amount of traffic control devices such as signs and pedestrian barriers.

Due to the bridge’s age and condition, the project involved many challenges. These included underwater crack repairs in one of the bridge piers, concrete repairs over I-5 on the east approach spans and strengthening the bascule span trunnion support towers.

In addition, the project had nine work zones and limited work windows. The Burnside Bridge crosses over TriMet’s Skidmore Fountain MAX station, Tom McCall Waterfront Park, UPRR’s rail main line and several arterial streets with high traffic volumes. An extensive traffic coordination plan was implemented to minimize impacts to traffic and numerous stakeholders while completing the work.
