2019 was a good year for tenant improvement projects in the wider Portland area. One of the best of those actually featured a local general contractor, Perlo Construction, reimagining their own headquarters.

With the boom of industrial and warehouse construction in the area in recent years, Perlo outgrew its old space in Tualatin and decided to expand. They hired multidisciplinary firm Mackenzie to handle both architectural and engineering work on the project, and self-performed the general contractor role.

The 48,000-square-foot building that resulted came about after plenty of research, programming and staff outreach to find out what was desired of a new, modern workplace. This resulted in a new entry lobby with a monumental stair, reception and locker facilities, wide-open and well-lit workspaces and a mixture of bright colors and natural finishes throughout.

The entryway is at the heart of the design and features a sculptural metal screen that is backlit by LED lighting. This draws viewers to the second-story reception area, which leads into staff spaces that are organized around office pods. Each pod has a specific aesthetic and materials, while each of these 鈥渘eighborhoods鈥 is connected with a wood-wrapped trellis that wraps up the entire package.
