Amanda Jones grew up with a love for math, science, being creative and the outdoors. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 know all of these passions could be combined into a career in engineering until late in my senior year of high school when a mentor told me about civil and environmental engineering.鈥�

While earning her civil engineering degree at the University of Portland, Jones took classes with a water resources emphasis and really enjoyed them. She said learning about hydrology, hydraulics and the natural environment was exciting and mentally stimulating, so when she graduated she looked for jobs in the water resources field.

Her work with Wolf Water Resources often involves going to the coast for field work and she likes to do tidal restoration projects. 鈥淥verall, though, some of my favorite projects have been on the Sandy River in Oregon and the Tucannon River in Washington because I was able to design and install large log jams, and that process is like creating a large sculpture that works with nature.鈥�

With many projects that involve multiple stakeholders and agencies, Jones is often charged with communicating technical engineering and ecological concepts to people with diverse backgrounds. She notes that it can be difficult but also fulfilling because she is challenged to see a design concept from many different angles and perspectives.

A volunteer with The Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership, Jones said she most appreciates the people she works with and the projects they do together.

鈥淓veryone truly cares about the environment and making a positive difference with the work that we do,鈥� she said. 鈥淚t is very rewarding to be part of a team of co-workers and clients who are passionate about restoring geomorphic, hydrologic and ecological processes to improve habitat for salmon and many other species.鈥�

Marjorie Wolfe, PE, CFM, president of Wolf Water Resources, pointed out that Jones is an athlete who has done rollerblading, dragon boat racing and weight lifting. 鈥淪he brings that same dedication, performance and teamwork approach to her work. She makes it fun and engages our staff at all levels in making high-performance work fun,鈥� she said.
